Coach Callahan failed to heed my advice and left Zac Taylor in the game for 3 quarters Saturday. He was rewarded with a 56-7 victory over Nicholls State but was lucky not to lose any key players. Combined with Troy State's impressive effort versus Florida State and Beau Davis now seems as likely to play this year as I am.

It seems the number one topic in NU's suite of offices in the South Stadium is what NOT to talk about. They're all about focusing on the next opponent, even if it is 1-AA Nicholls State. Here at Big Red Network, we know the die-hard Husker fans want something to talk about other than the extremely long odds of a 1-AA school pulling a shocker (sorry, Buff fans). During the season, I like to compare the depth charts of Nebraska and its opponents to see where Nebraska has advantages and where their opponent has them. This week it was a pretty pointless exercise. The Huskers are bigger virtually everywhere and with the exception of a couple of big wideouts (who in the option offense are really more like tight ends), Nicholls State will be at a size disadvantage across the board.

In one of the many classic quotes spawned by the Simpsons, one exchange between Homer Simpson and his daughter Lisa captures my feelings about the Nicholls State game:

We Husker fans wouldn't miss a football game, even when it's likely to be as exciting as watching Al Gore buying a new pair of shoes. The Huskers-Nicholls State contest is the equivalent of watching a twelve year-old boy fighting his six year-old brother. Not only is their no doubt about the outcome but it's just wrong on so many levels.
