On Sloppiness 5 comments

On the road, there are worse things than winning ugly

Slop. It's a nasty word, the stuff pig troughs are full of and ugly horse races are run on. You can call a team a lot of things but few things are as distasteful as sloppy and that's what the Huskers were last Saturday. Bo said it, you said it, the media said it.

But more galling might be the implication behind the label. If you're "sloppy" and hope to win you also need to be "lucky", perhaps the only word that outpaces sloppy when it comes to ugly descriptors. Nobody wants to be a "lucky team." At least sloppiness is earned.

What’s Scary About Washington? 18 comments

The Washington Huskies have been a significant opponent in the somewhat recent history of Nebraska football. In 1991, they won in Lincoln and won a national championship in a year where Nebraska reclaimed its rightful place in the Orange Bowl. In 1992, Nebraska lost to a Washington team in Seattle that finished in the top ten, and Nebraska repeated as Big 8 champs. The 1997 contest in Seattle helped catapult Nebraska to a national championship. The 1998 victory over a then 9th ranked Washington squad in Lincoln seemed to signal that things were going to be OK at Nebraska in Frank Solich's first year. Once again, these teams meet during an auspicious time in Nebraska history.

How Good Will Washington Be? 43 comments

If you've paid attention to Nebraska's nonconference scheduling over the years you've noticed that the slate includes a few near-certain victories with at least one credible if not nationally prominent opponent. Over the next two seasons, Nebraska's biggest name opponent will be the Washington Huskies. In the first of each of the last home and home series between the Huskers and Huskies, the winner went on to capture a national championship. If for no other reason, that will make this a highly anticipated game by NU fans. But when you see that the Huskies haven't been to a bowl game since 2002 and has put together six straight losing seasons, you wonder if this contest will live up to the ones against the likes of Virginia Tech.

Huskerkill:  Brock Huard 6 comments

There are any number of quarterbacks over the years we could have selected as Huskerkill, but Washington's Brock Huard stands out both because he lead a top ten team into two contests with Nebraska but also because he didn't finish either game.

Recruiting Roundup:  Washington 0 comments

The Huskies put together a terrific recruiting class. Maybe not a USC-caliber class but certainly one a Washington fan could be excited about. There are nine four-star prospects including a five-star tight end. The rest of that group consists of three offensive linemen, two defensive linemen, two receivers and a running back. That's a lot of beef and a lot of skill.
