Nebraska Beats Penn State But Spartans Win Too
Nebraska got a much-needed victory at Penn State 17-14, but it wasn't enough to reclaim a lead in the Legends Division. Just as they did against Michigan State, the Huskers managed to be efficient enough on both sides of the football to gut out a win in a hard-hitting game. Meanwhile, the Spartans won impressively in Iowa City to maintain a one game lead in the division race.
This week featured a rejuvenated effort by Husker running back Rex Burkhead. Burkhead rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown in the game. NU quarterback Taylor Martinez did enough right running and passing, but more importantly avoiding sacks and interceptions. The Husker defense continued to have some difficulty against the run, but was stout enough overall to contain the Nittany Lion offense.
As expected, the game wasn't an offensive shootout. Rather, it was a slugfest where the punt teams got extensive work and the yards had to be earned. Nebraska managed to take a commanding 17-0 lead, but the Nittany Lions fought back to close the gap to 17-14. The game ended when the clock expired as Penn State failed to score on a final desperation drive.
The Spartans now have an easy home game against woeful Indiana before closing at Northwestern. The Wildcats will likely need to pull another upset against a division leader for the Huskers to have an opportunity to play for a Big Ten title. But at least hopes of a division title remain alive for one more weekend. Up next for NU is a Michigan team with an offense that is extremely intimidating. A loss there could make a MSU-Northwestern game academic.
Beyond the contest though, thoughts had to be on the victims of Jerry Sandusky. The game may mark a return to normalcy for many. But for those children, healing will take a lifetime.

THANK YOU HUSKERS!!!!!!!
The B1G owes you BIG TIME. The good guys won today.
Can’t wait to see how PSU fans are treated on the road in Columbus. They will get what they deserve.
11/12/2011
You are an uninformed IDIOT and you represent part of what’s wrong with sports fans today and that is you no respect for your opponent.
Evidently, you were not awake when the PSU story broke. The players weren’t lined up at the showers taking turns having their way with children.
However, congratulations on coming out of your coma. Doofus.
11/12/2011
You guys will learn… Give it a couple more years and you’ll see. I understand that your exposure to Penn State is still limited.
Have to admit I was a bit offended by the riots in support of Paterno. It was also rumored that the players also wanted to give their disgraced coach the game ball today if they had won.
I’m a hawkeye (and we are typically known for being rather mild-mannered), and the fact that Penn State was even willing to take the field today is offensive.
Regardless, great game today by the Huskers. And I still believe that sincere thanks (even if we are quiet about it) are in order.
Just my 2 cents. Take it or leave it.
11/12/2011
Why should the team not take the field because of several failed leaders in the administration? They worked hard, deserved to play, and respected Nebraska. Even Victim 1’s mother said she does not want hate to come down on the students and that her son would be cheering for PSU. It was a great game to watch and we clapped at the end for everyone involved. Don’t ruin this with bad sportsmanship! Good game Nebraska.

Ames? Switching conferences is hard :)
11/12/2011
@OU7times
True, but these same players wanted to walk the game ball to Joe Pa’s house after the game…...I can understand that most of them would view this as a show of respect towards Joe Pa, but what about the victims and there families? How many of those victims could have been prevented if someone including Joe Pa would have done the right thing to begin with. Aside from being a Husker fan i’m glad as a member of society that Joe Pa wasn’t rewarded for being such a coward.
As for the game when are Bo and Timmy going to learn to manage the clock? It’s only a matter of time before this comes back to burn us. Also a toss player on 4th and 1 with the game on the line? Crazy!
Game ball should go to the blackshirts as a unit, hell of a game they played today!

Robert,
No one will win your argument. That’s not to say that your point isn’t well taken. These kids love their coach, not unlike Nebraska’s fans. Sometimes our familes do horrible things and you still love them. Nebraska fans would do the same for Pelini and Osborne i am sure.
But, I watched the game and I didn’t see an ‘good guy’s or ‘bad guys’ so please don’t dare confuse the players with sandusky, mc what’s his name or Paterno
It was a horrible mistake and i’m not going to minimize the fact but life (football) as you see, still goes on.

I thought it was a good game today and a good win. They had the better defense but we had the better offense and I think the better overall team. We just beat the #12 ranked team in the country and the 8th best defense in the country. The offense and defense both had their moments…both good and bad. Probably more bad than good but enough good…lots of punts today. Penn State didn’t get past midfield hardly ever so our defense was good. I was impressed by the play by the offensive line. They took on one of the best defensive lines in the country and I thought at times did a pretty good job. Out played the defensive line. Andrew Greens name was called a lot, he was all over the place, but Ciante Evans was out of position many times. Martinez played great I thought. Excellent decisions and lots of passes with authority and some good runs too. I wish he’d break one once in a while though…I miss that part of our old offense.
Michigan State most likely won’t loose again this season so they pretty much have the division wrapped up, even though we beat the pants off them. That kinda sucks…if it wasn’t for that one bad game against Northwestern…
11/12/2011
Robert,
I meant to say that no one could reasonably argue against your point regarding cowardice.
I think it was a mistake announcing that the fans would walk the ‘winning’ game ball to Coach Paterno’s house. To me, that’s just what you would do IF you won and not announce it ahead of time for this exact reason. Kind of looks silly now.

Maybe I’m being a little thick - but I don’t get why the B1G conference owes the Huskers anything. From my perspective the individual team members for both PSU and NU are neither good guys nor bad. They are simply stuck in the middle.
I’m very thankful that the game today came off with no reports of violence or untoward behavior by members of the PSU student body or fans in general. I was very fearful that even the smallest incident, on or off the field could escalate into something very ugly.
But as I said in an earlier thread, it is time for the PSU football team to hang up the cleats for this year. Punishes the players - yes it does. I’m not an expert in sociology but in my most humble opinion, sacrifices will be required to effect a societal change throughout the PSU administration, faculty, coaches, student body, and the fan base . If foreiting the remaining games of PSU’s season will initiate that change then it should be done.
I understand the support for a beloved coach. When Paterno’s son began weeping during his post-game interview on the field, I felt some of the pain too. However, Joe Paterno had a chance each and every day for the past 9+ years to put a stop to what had (alledgedly) happened on campus. He failed to do this and now young lives are in shambles. The support PSU fans showed for Paterno in their attire and signs throughout the stadium show the Penn State faithful don’t understand these lost opportunities.
What a statement would be made if the PSU players themselves turned in their jerseys tomorrow and declared ENOUGH! The change begins with us. That would truly be a “Senior Day” of note.
As far as the B1G goes, they should cancel the championship game and declare the winners of each division co-champions. Again there is sacrifice by those innocent of wrong doing but it would acknowledge the sacrifice of the PSU players and show that the conference is willing to support their teammates.
Who then goes to the Rose Bowl? - flip a coin, a best two out of three series of Rock, Paper Scissors - how you decide doesn’t matter. What matters is putting a little backbone in all the pronouncements for supporting the alledged (I really hate that word now) victims.
As Coach Ron Brown said in his pre-game prayer, “May the truth be known. May justice be known to protect the victims.”
Father. Forgive them. They know not what they do.

I am a Nittany…I cant change that…dont want to. I/we will learn to live with this and work through this. Not sure if we will forefit the next games like mentioned above or not, or if we even accept or put ourselves on some type of temporary 3-5 year death penalty/ban. Whatever the NCAA, or the Big 10, or our own admin punishment is handed down to us…I will accpet.
I just wanted to say thank you to Nebraska for your exemplorary fine group of young men, coaches, admin, and fans. The Bid Red is awesome.

Thanks Darren it was not really a issue to me, but I know you guys like positive input. Had the MSU game been vs the Cyclones who knows? ISU can pull out wins when the “experts” say it wont happen LOL

OU7… I completely understand where are guys are coming from. Huskers are widely known for courtesy That is admirable, respected, and appreciated.
But while players have fond feelings for their coach and fans have fond feelings for their team, it is no where near the feelings that parents have for their children. Let’s not lose sight of that.
What the Penn State administration allowed to happen to those children for more than 15 years is (at least to me) unforgivable. Their support of Paterno in this situation is unthinkable in a civilized society.

First, what a great game, not just by the Huskers, but also by Penn State as well. That team fought hard today through a lot of different issues, and came up short. I am really happy that I haven’t heard how they lost because of everything going on around them, which would take away from what they did today!
I do however wish that everyone would stop talking that they need to hang up the season. The players on this team did nothing wrong period, and they don’t deserve to be treated like that by no one. Want to clean house of all the coach, do it at the end of the season, right now it would be a safety factor on the players.
I can’t ever remember a time in college football (my memory isn’t what it used to be) when both teams came to the center of the field together and prayed for anyone. That is the respect that we should be talking about here, and not bringing up the coaches! Of course they loved JoePa, even I had a huge amount of respect for him, but they like me had no idea that this had happened. We would want to put ourselves behind our coach too. But at the end we have to let justice take it from here and make a decision as to who is guilty and who isn’t. Remember this doesn’t stop at Penn State.
PE, I don’t know what you were trying to say about A. Green, but what I noticed was every long pass that was completed; he seemed to be the one that was supposed to be covering the receiver.
Overall, our defense played really well. They went against 3 running backs that run the ball hard! One of them is already over a 1k yards, and we didn’t let him have that many today. Well done defense!!
The offense looks a lot better than last week, no doubt. I honestly think that they don’t want T-Mart running like he did last year, for fear of another injury. I really think that he is starting to get what he needs to do in a game. Even today, he just made the plays, played smart, and didn’t push anything. Before, a couple missed passes, and he would start to force things. Can’t wait to see the changes in him next year!
MSU will probably win out, but NU can also win out and end with a 10 win season. That is a 10 win season while starting in a new conference! There is nothing to be upset with that! I would be happy and proud of this team with that record.
Though we just joined the conference, it isn’t our first time meeting Penn State, and we do understand how fans there do act. I am willing to let them have a chance to turn the corner and see that there is something better. Today, there was nothing but praise for the fans, and that is a worthy note!
Now let’s get ready for Michigan, it is going to be a tough game!!!
GBR!!

I like many fans tuned into the Penn State v. Nebraska game. Every emotion was there curiosity, nervousness and interest in the outcome of the game, as to how it may have affected Michigan, in the standings. What I saw was two class organizations. With all that was swirling around Penn State this week it was easy to imagine a less than maximum effort from this game. I’m sure the emotions were running high, but I think the pre-game prayer session between the two schools helped eased the stress of the situation. There were no clowns in the stands that I saw, it was just two class organizations playing a hard fought game. As a Michigan fan my hats off to Nebraska and Penn State for being the class institutions they are and may no shcool have to go through this type of agonizing situation again.

Blake really? I never posted that he was playing out of his mind, or that he was putting the ball into tight places, but he played well, and managed the game. Did he miss some passes? Yes. Does Payton Manning miss passes? Yes. What is the issue? I think that there were a few that the reciever was in the wrong place as well.
If it makes you so sick to watch, maybe you should tune back into the Big 12 on Saturdays. I will continue to watch the Huskers, it makes me feel great to see them play.
GBR!!

Holy cow, Blake. You’re not helping your argument at all because all the reader has to consider in your post is the source of the intelligence level of the person delivering it. Really.
LaVergne,TN
11/13/2011
Really! Blake, you can’t expect Taylor to make a perfect throw everytime. Most of the bad throws were due to the fact the receiver or Taylor made a bad read. The receivers just simply weren’t there to catch the throws. While he did have some bad throws(like every other qb that plays the game) there is a difference between bad throws and missed reads. Now what is with BK this year? I hope he gets it together, he is a big target we need him to catch the ball.
11/13/2011
Come watch us here in the Big 12. We Are really playing awesome ball lately. OU vs OSU is going to be just awesome and the whole country will be watching.
Tampa Fl
11/13/2011
@OU7, that was a compliment to you not a hit. I think there are some great college passers in that league.
11/13/2011
While I agree Martinez did a good job of management, I think his receiving corps let him down at times. BK in particular. Kinda sad to see the senior going downhill. I had high expectations for him this year. I’m more concerned about Beck relying too much on Rex. 2nd and 1 and you call on him to run an option to the FB. That was a major turning point in the game and darn near cost us this one. I hope that’s the last Watson moment Beck suffers. Major kudos to the Blackshirts for holding it together.
Time to focus on Michigan. Real challenge going to the big house for the first time. Atmosphere is going to be crazy, and dual threat QBs seem to give our D fits. Martinez needs to repeat his OSU effort.
Go Big Red!
11/13/2011
Blake…come on man…are you kidding me? He has improved to the point of completely changing the way he plays…he was a running threat because that is where the vast majority of his talent is and that is why he was recruited to Nebraska. Now he is turning himself into an actual quarterback. Can’t see why that’s so hard to see. Some of his passes were outstanding and some weren’t. Did he miss any? Yes of course. All quarterbacks do. Not as much as Bolden if you’ll notice though, he was WAY off on several throws. Credit the defense. Was he or his receivers out of position? Yes. But did his receivers drop some balls? Oh ya. Like someone else mentioned, he didn’t force the issue, his passing was a legitamate threat so it kept the running game open, and he didn’t turn the ball over and made some runs to boot. Plus he made clutch plays in broken situations and I also thought that pitch to Burkhead for that final (?) score behind the defender was highlight worthy.
11/13/2011
ruggerhusker,
No problem here. I took your comment as indifferent.
Martinez looked more settled in this game and now people might just get off this kids back for a while.
I have to admit that I love watching him pass the ball. Unorthodox but fun. I think 90 pct of his passes are off his back foot!
He makes it work though.
Nebraska didn’t get the press for winning this game for obvious reasons and I guess people who actually ‘get it’ understand why.
I would say that this game was a turning point for Coach Pelini in my eyes. He had the guys focused and even Stevie Wonder could see that PSU was going to mount a rally in the second half.
11/13/2011
PE In Charleston..
I agree with you on most of your opinions on T-Mart.. the only one I disagree with is the fact that he was brought here to run.. He was actually brought here to tackle.. Thats why he started camp as a safety.. The coaches wanted him at Safety but T-Mart wanted a chance at QB, so they said they would let him try .. Thank goodness for chance.. HEs gonna be tremendous with another year under the belt if he keeps on pregressing like he has this last year ..
11/14/2011
You know I’d heard that but was never confirmed. He was a QB in High School and threw for over 3000 yeards in his senior year. Carl Pelini, the story goes, was in the area and got a tip to go check out this Martinez guy, so he did, signed him on the spot and the rest is history.
But was he actually recruited to play safety? I don’t know.
The coach for Oregon calls him a runner who plays QB - noting that they have a QB who can run and there is a big difference. I don’t know about that because quite frankly, he can pass plenty good enough to do what we need him to and he’s getting better and better. Still weird mechanics I don’t know why they haven’t corrected, but it occurs to me that maybe they just don’t want to mess with something that’s working and showing promise. Maybe doing it the “right way” messes him up and he just can’t do it. Granted, he’s not your prototypical NFL type of drop back in the pocket passer (which I don’t like anyway) but a dual threat QB which, in my opinion, I’d rather have. Those types give our defense the hardest problems so why not. Plus NU has always had those kinds of QBs. Plus it’s just more exciting to watch.
My big regret about Taylor martinez is, yes he’s a great game manager now and making good decisions and all, and making a LOT better throws, but we’ve lost that excitement; that edge of your seat, that “Taylors breaking another one” get you on your feet screaming go go go g! We don’t get to see his explosive running anymore. And that’s a mistake I think. We’ve bettered the guy but at what cost? He hasn’t broken a run over 20-30 yards in the last 5-6 games and that’s bad. If Nebraska doesn’t take advantage of his God given talents he ceases to be an explosive running threat. He tried against Penn State but they stopped him flat out. That was the best defensive line we’ll see all year…those guys were awesome! What a defense. And we still scored on tham - that’s encouraging but for another story. He’s still a threat but unless he unleases one here pretty soon we might have to face the fact that last year’s heroics was something we’re just not going to see anymore. What a shame…it means no more T Magic. I’m amazed they didn’t plan this new offense around that weapon…they hardly use it anymore and the problem with that is it turns him into a game manager which sucks, is boring and a complete waste of a guy’s talents who last year before he got hurt were enough to not only breal records as a freshman but was enough to catapolt him into the Heisman talk. You have to admit…it was fun to see. That Kansas State game will live in my memory forever! it was the zone read and I’d like a coaches explanation why that couldn’t work again? he is awesome at it. You can go on youtube and see a Sports Science of his running skills…after his third step he is already going faster than an arrow shot out of a bow for Gods sakes and we’re not using that? I also think we were a WAY better team offensively and defensively last year…again though, before he got hurt. We were watching a star in the making last year and watching him grow up right before our eyes…we haven’t seen anything like that around here in over a decade…and the coaching staff for some reason seems to feel that was bad direction…even though no one could beat us. Hmmm…
11/14/2011
BTW…this just in from Sam McKewen (sp)...about Martinez…“3,319: Career passing yards for Martinez, who passed Turner Gill and Vince Ferragamo on NU’s all-time list. Just a sophomore, he could rewrite every statistical quarterback record Nebraska has”.
Wow. He’s even better than I thought! LOL!!!
I forgot to ask…anyone see the Joe Ganz influence in Taylor this year? I think it’s probably the best thing they ever did for him as far as his passing is concerned. I can kinda see it in his play now and passing.
