Nebraska Offense Delivers Victory Over Washington
Going into the 2011 season, concerns surrounded Nebraska's offense while the defense seemed likely to be strong. For the second straight week though, it was Nebraska's offense that delivered victory as the defense struggled. Taylor Martinez accounted for 237 total yards and three touchdowns while Rex Burkhead rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Washington quarterback Keith Price produced 275 passing yards and four touchdowns while Husky running back Chris Polk ran for 130 yards and a score. The difference in the game may have been two turnovers for Price and none by Martinez.
Nebraska did a good job of spreading the ball around. Five NU ball carriers ran for 30 yards or more as the Huskers rushed for over 300 yards. Seven Huskers caught passes in the game as well. The three true freshman running backs made their mark. Aaron Green scored two touchdowns, Heard carried the ball nicely in the second half and Ameer Abdullah was injured on a big return after an earlier fumble that led to points by Washington.
The special teams were mixed. Mathew May recovered an inexcusable third quarter fumble by Washington that set up a Burkhead touchdown, but big returns were had by Washington as well. Brett Maher was a perfect three for three on field goals but Nebraska's kickoffs left something to be desired at times.
The defense played well in spots but mostly struggled. The defensive line had trouble getting pressure on Price. The linebackers were noticeably better than a week ago but still had trouble at times against the run. The secondary looked downright lost at times. Alfonzo Dennard can't get back soon enough for this unit.
But all in all a good victory for Nebraska which can now continue to tune up its defense at Wyoming next week.

Offense is showing all they need to show before going into conf. When it gets tight; go with what works, get the score, then go back to working on what they’re working on.
Defense is bending but not…well for the most part making stops when…forcing punts. Yeah work to be done but over-all:
my thoughts are they look pretty good and will compete.
9/17/2011
Why is Andrew Green even on the field?
9/17/2011
one thing is overlooked - washington should’ve had a touchdown on that muffed punt that was called back. terrible call that could’ve swayed the game. i don’t know about this year’s team. in the past they at least looked dominant in their nonconference games and still came up short. this year they’re looking vulnerable even in their early schedule. what happens when we play osu, wisconsin, etc?
taylor martinez is not a good passer - his motion is unorthodox. the defense is no longer dominant

I listened to the game on the radio and it sounded like the defense played well until the 4th qtr. Our youngsters were getting burned on some big plays. The next UW shouldn’t give us much concern. The game is in my backyard and I’ll miss it. Our son graduates from Army Basic in SC. Thank goodness for DVRs. Go Big Red!

Wow robert…. I see problems too but I also seen a o line that pushed ppl around today and that’s pretty damn important. Our defense is just young and when dennard comes back it will help… plus the big ten didn’t look every good today loss’s by Ohio state,Michigan state, and a close win for iowa and penn state. Im not really worried.. except for Wisconsin they look like a top 5 team hands down. Go big red!!!!!

@Robert #2
Martinez is still a young QB, you can already see his improvements….ball security comes to mind. Twice today he covered up and went down instead of trying to make something out of a bad situation. The kind of plays that usually result in a big loss or turnover for him.
On the other hand I still think that Andrew Green is a huge liability, and should be on the field right now.
9/18/2011
The thing with Green is he was extremely hit or miss tonight. Yes, he got beat on a few deep routes, but where were the safeties on those plays (I could almost swear Cassidy is channeling the spirit of O’Hanlon)? On the flip side Green had several great open field tackles and great man coverage on the plays where Price had to run/throw it away. The guy is a sophomore who played about 2 minutes last season currently surrounded by a so-so secondary and one man LB core- cut him some slack.

Kudos to the O-Line this week!!!! This is one week where they just shut my complaining mouth. Great job!!!!

And Choi played great for Rodriguez!!!

Hands down the O-line played an outstanding game! 50+ points that is what they need to be doing. T-Mart, played much smarter then what we have seen in the past. I do agree that I worry a bit about his passing, will have to see it against a good pass defense.
Defense what gives? Green shouldn’t be cut that much slack, almost every big play went to him, and he had already blown the coverage. Cassidy wasn’t there because it was man coverage. Even if he is the best selection he should be benched just to show other players to pick it up. This is looking more like the worse defense that Bo has produced. If they don’t show real improvement, Wisconsin will show us how to play.
Anyone thinking that the B1G didn’t play well and we will be fine, think about it, it is their first year to play us, do you think they will be up for it? They have chomped at the bit to play since it was announced that we were moving.
I am as well very impressed with the Huskies. In a year that was not suppose to be very good for them, they played much better than they did last year. I think that Price is going to turn into a very good QB.
This game was decided by special teams not the offense! Plus, we did get lucky with that first special teams call, it could have changed the entire game. The offense played much better, with that fire in the belly, which we hadn’t seen all year. But a 25% conversion on third down will not cut it in any league. That shows a pretty much all or nothing kind of offense.
I am hoping that we will see a fined tuned, ready to play offense and defense on Oct.1 and all of this is only part of the game plan.
GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry in my randomness, I wanted to give a shout out to Choi, walk on, first game, I thought that he did great! The O-line and an attitude last night and it showed.

The Oline was a delightful surprise. Wow….with three walkons. Love it!

I think choi definitely needs to stay in the lineup. It’s peculiar that the o line was garbage until rodriguez was out and choi was in. hit seems he was the glue needed to hold the whole thing together. I just hope dennard can come back for wyoming to get some game speed practice before wisconson. Ciante evans blew some coverages as well on a couple of long third down plays, but he is definitely a step up from green. dwith dennard back hopefully we won’t be giving up as many deep balls, or as many pass plays period. Does anyone else think brandon kinnie should only be on the field to block? he is a great dowbfield blocker, pass catcher… Not so much. We need to keep getting these frchmen and sophomore players the ball, I.e. Bell, enunwa, green, abdulah, heard, turner. It has becoame clear that these guys are the real talent of our offense (add burkhead and reed). Overall, promising performance. It seemed like the things I’ve been worried about the past 2 weeks were geled out nicely, and the things that went wrong can be fixed. We still don’t look up to wisconsons caliber but we are making great progress! GBR

B1G officials (checks are in the mail).
Huskie supporters didn’t seem to factor in a healthy T-Magic.
You got a nice preview of Nebraska’s offensive potential, with Martinez in more of a distributer role, with the spectre of him on qb keepers. With conference play a couple of weeks away, that part of the team is on schedule. Dig him, protecting his body!
Amazing how good a “Nebraska heart” walkon heavy o-line can look, when everything else is in place, like top shelf edge speed…
Lilke I mentioned last week, if you want Pelini angry, you want him upset with the D; something he can personally go “hands on” with.
Washington has a nice offense. Well coached, with some future NFL skill. About the most sophisticated offense Nebraska will face until the Rose Bowl.
9/18/2011
While I’m just as worried about the defense as most of you are, let’s also give some credit to Keith Price. The guy made some unbelievable plays, especially when under pressure.
9/18/2011
Our defense is going to be fine they should look up some videos of Greg Plitt a former Army Airborne Ranger and take some advise (can be found on youtube.com) and Pop them Abs, play and work with a chip on you shoulder saying that what is your best is not good enough for you, who cares what everyone is saying in the media, you know what you did and you know what you left on the field. GO BIG RED and Pop them Abs the other team should fear you, screw respect. Respect is something earned game after game after game. Make them FEAR you Blackshirts.

Just some random thoughts:
1. It almost makes me think of the 2008 season in some ways.
2. Maybe the Huskers won’t have any deficiencies after this season.
3. When Dennard returns, at least I that half the field will be
shutdown. lol
4. Schematically Sarkisian was good, Price made great plays. Just
imagine what Russell Wilson COULD do?
9/18/2011
Wisconsin is very good and they concern me a lot because they seems very talented. I also believe that our Huskers will be up for this game as much as Wisconsin’s team will be for us. It should be an exciting game to watch. I’m puzzled by how the coaches do not seem able to fix our lack of coverage problems in our secondary and the lack of our D line to get penetration through out the game. Yesterday their QB seemed to have all day to pass. The coaches need to find a way to solve these problems because if they don’t and TM gets hurt or opposing D shuts him down then we could see several loses this season. GBR!!!

Props to the oline and the offense as a whole. We saw Beck open up the playbook a little and it looks good! I’m relieved. Vintage NEBRASKA FOOTBALL. A walk-on heavy platooned oline and even the full back hand-off up the middle.
On Defense, it’s not time to panic YET, but I am worried. We have a lot of youth and in-experience on defense and they are going to have to get coached up. It’s going to take some time. I don’t know if we will be ready for Wisconsin in two weeks, but if we see them in the Big 10 championship game, they better be ready for us!
9/18/2011
Washington has a very good coaching staff. NU is very young on the o line and the secondary and it’s very discernible. They’ll get better. I hate to see any injuries, but having Dennard sit and have some other DBs get some experience may help the team November. I like the way Moore and Rome are filling in at DT.

Just realized Nebraska is playing all three UWs in a row. :)
Well, one down two to go.

Random thoughts to add:
1) Tremendous first drive and wonderful playcalling by Coach Beck. . .
2) Really like where the offense is going conceptually. . .
3) Been a long time where we saw multiple Receivers catch balls, and seen multiple IB’s make their impression on the game. . .
4) Martinez really began to grow as a QB in the 2nd quarter onwards. For the first time he started to look and think like a QB. The proverbial light bulb is beginning to burn for this talent. He’ll still force plays from time to time, but he is starting to settle down and learn the position. I never thought that I would say this, but he is the leader of this offense, and that is a good thing. . .
5) Choi, gosh, he looked like a Korean Coke Machine, with arms and legs in there. Tremendous game, and way to take advantage of your opportunity. Happy for you to perform that well. . .
6) Two Lane Read—Not sure if we can continue to have all Defensive Lineman play this. We need to turn Crick loose, from time to time, and let him just shoot the A Gap. The LB’s are just going to have problems with reading keys and finishing plays. Since it is hard to imagine a LB other than David getting into the backfield we need to get someone in there to be disruptive. To complicate things a little more with the young secondary it makes it imperative that we get our front four to be disruptive. The two lane read was great for the Big 12 with all of the spread formations. From time to time we might need to tinker with that during small stretches of the game. . .
7) Coach Sarkisian is doing a great job in Washington. They really were well prepared and played a good game offensively for a team almost as young as we are. Keith Price is a winner, and someone who will take Washington places during his career there. Not an easy offense to operate, and he ran it well. They are going to be a dangerous team this year as the season goes forward. . .
8) Offense showed that it could make big plays and chew the clock. Coach Beck & the offense as a whole will continue to get better. There’s a lot for defensive coordinators to have to plan for in just one week. The fact that we are willing to check to a sprint, or load option, is a lot of stress to put on a defense let alone gameplan for in a limited space of time. A lot of the plays UNLV ran effectively against Wisconsin, we run as staples of our attack. You cannot underestimate how much this unit grew up on Saturday. This past Saturday was the psychological equivalent of breaking through the sound barrier. This unit knows that it can play, and score points. . .
9/19/2011
Really like what I’ve seen from martinez. He isn’t there yet but he really has made progress and you could see it on and off the field Saturday. I like seeing him engaged on the sideline. All that said im looking for these guys to come out and put it all together against Wyoming and really build some confidence and swagger heading to Wisconsin. If they don’t come out and make Wyoming look silly they wont stand a chance at Wisconsin.

Why is the d-line lining up so far back from the line of scrimmage? Am I missing something?
9/19/2011
Mike: Yeah, I noticed the same thing. My memory isn’t working today but have the huskers D line been lining up this way since the start of the season or just this game?
