What We Know Now Wisconsin/Anti-hoopla edition

Hoopla. Nebraska ignores it and this game is bound to be filled to the brim with frothy, delicious hoopla like so many steins overflowing with Wisconsin-brewed suds.

If you wanted to break down Nebraska's weekly press conference into one sentence it's this: Keep your hoopla to yourself. Luckily there were some other notes of note.

--Fun fact prelude: Wisconsin is 27-3 in its last 30 night games (winning the last six) and 9-2 in their last 11 night games at Camp Randall Stadium.

--Nebraska opened as a 7-point underdog Sunday and is a 10-point pooch as of this writing, the biggest spread the Huskers have faced since being a 14-point underdog to Texas. Some people say Bo Pelini is better when he can use this mindset. Bo Pelini is not one of those people. "We don’t pay attention to that stuff. We don’t talk about whether we’re underdogs or 30-point favorites. Our approach doesn’t change." My guess is this is only a half-truth. When the underdog card is there it's hard not to play it.

--That said, WR Brandon Kinnie said he "takes it personal" that people aren't giving Nebraska much of a chance and QB Taylor Martinez - channeling Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber - said the Huskers were ready to "shock the world." And this is why it's tough not to play the underdog card. The players are already using it as motivation despite saying they're not.

--Fun fact interlude: Wisconsin hasn't hosted a meeting of two top 10 teams in a long time. So long ago, in fact, that it was when Minnesota was ranked in the top five. In 1962 No. 3 Wisconsin beat No. 5 Minnesota 14-9. That's one thing going for Nebraska in this game. The "prove it" onus is probably more on (highly regarded) Wisconsin than it is on the (perceivably over-ranked) Huskers.

--Two fun ones from everybodys press conference superstar LT Yoshi Hardrick.

1) Yoshi I why he won't be moving to a ranch in Wyoming. "I don’t ever want to go back to Wyoming again,” Hardrick said Monday. “I couldn’t breathe. A lot of us couldn’t. After two plays your mouth goes dry.”

2) On Wisconsin's pillowy non-conference schedule: "I don’t think they’ve played anybody that’s been physical yet. We’ve got a great chance to wake them up." This quote came directly after Yoshi talked about Fresno State giving Nebraska bulletin board material. That's why Yoshi's great. He just talks.

--Martinez on how the no-huddle will run in the noisy environment of Camp Randall Stadium: "I think (no-huddle) will probably make it easier honestly because the WRs and RBs already know the plays and I just have to communicate it to the line. That’s not that hard.” Interesting angle. I typically take my Martinez comments heavily salted but is there a kernel of truth there? I always like quotes that challenge the conventional wisdom.

--Is DT Jared Crick going to be back to practice (and presumably the game) this week? "Uh-huh," said Pelini. No, really. It's in the transcript.

--Not-so-fun fact processional: Nebraska last played in a game featuring two top 10 teams in 2001, beating Oklahoma 20-10. Bo Pelini is 1-5 in four years against top 10 opponents.

I think you have to look at the Texas Game and the OU game as a great effort that will pay off as experience come Saturday.  I think it will be a fun game to watch and will not be decided until the last minute, one way or the other. I am most interested to see what the brothers Pelini have in mind on the defensive side of the ball. Second to that is what may have been held back on the offensive side so far as well. Time to let it all out.  Lastly, it is good to remember that it is extremely difficult for a quarterback to throw a pass from his back. Also, a really good QB will pick you apart if you give him time without pressure.

Wisconsin isn’t exactly the ‘01 ‘Canes. Or even Bama, from a couple of years ago. What they are, is a good test. If that fantastic new QB hadn’t fallen into their laps, I wouldn’t give ‘em a second thought.
He’s playing well, so, that changes things.
If Bo maintains his’self and Martinez doesn’t get hurt, (or Superman) Nebraska will make enough plays. Oh, and I fully expect the D to reach an early season high intensity level.
Coaching quality is going to be even, against the good teams, from here on out. Now, it comes down to tough, fast players.
Which, Nebraska has enough of.

Its funny…las vegas has Wisconsin over Nebraska….but the funny thing is WHO HAS WISCONSIN PLAYED? a big fat NOBODY!! I take the huskers by 2 touchdowns. Rich please make sure this gets posted this time…thanks.

Wisconsin has NEVER been in NEBRASKA’s league…NEVER…EVER

I am hoping for a Mizzou type effort from last year in this game.  I think that the Pelini’s have it in them to bring that to any game.  It is up to the players to let it out during the game.
I don’t think that we are talking about Big Red blowing out Wiskey, it is a different team than they have been in the past!  They are fast and strong up front, on both sides of the ball, and we haven’t shown that we are strong up front on either side of the ball.
If they are ranked appropriately, then it will prove to be a great game.
GBR!
